It was the hinterland of Qianzhong Jun in the Qin Dynasty and under the jurisdiction of Wuling Jun in the Han Dynasty. After the founding of the Kingdom of Shuhan, it began to set the county government. In Tang Dynasty, it belonged to Sizhou, Jinzhou and Qianzhou. At the end of the Song Dynasty, it began to set Sizhou and Sinan Supervision Agencies. In Yuan Dynasty, it set the Aboriginal Chiefs' Office. In the 11th year under the rein of Yong Le, it cancelled Sizhou and Sinan Supervision Agencies and set four government offices of Tongren, Sinan, Shiqian and Wuluo under the jurisdiction of new Guizhou Province. Its setting had no change in the Qing Dynasty. After the founding of the Republic of China, it experienced 7 changes. In February of the 32nd year after the founding (1943), the whole province set 6 administrative supervision areas, in which the 6th supervision office was set at Tongren County, administering 9 counties including Tongren, Jiangkou, Yuping, etc. Since then, the setting was basically fixed. Tongren was liberated on January 12, 1950 after the founding of new China with the setting of Tongren administrative region and the office in Tongren County, administering 9 counties including Tongren, Jiangkou, Yuping, etc. In 1987, the State of Council approved of cancelling Tongren County and setting the county-level Tongren City. The original administrative area was unchanged. Then, Tongren Region had 8 counties, 1 city and 1 special area. On October 22, 2011, the State Council approved of cancelling Tongren Region and setting the prefecture-level Tongren City, which started the new chapter of Tongren’s development.
